Student welfare

Student care is an important part of school operations. Student care refers to the promotion and maintenance of good learning, good mental and physical health, and social well-being of students. Its purpose is to promote the balanced growth and development of students and a culture of caring and positive interaction in the school community. Student care aims to prevent and identify learning barriers, learning difficulties, and other problems in a timely manner and to intervene in them.

The Pääsky student welfare team includes the principal, special education teachers, study counselors, a school nurse, a curator, a psychologist, and a psychiatric nurse.

• The school nurse is available at the school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
• The school counselor is at the school on Wednesdays.
• Guidance for psychiatric nurses is provided through student support.
• A school psychologist is present at the school on certain predetermined days.

School meals are part of the school's teaching and educational mission. It is a lesson in healthy eating habits, diverse food and good eating habits. The aim is to promote the well-being, study efficiency and school enjoyment of students. Therefore, it would be important for students to eat school lunch and assemble it in a diverse and healthy way according to the plate model. In Jämijärvi, school meals are made on site in the production kitchen.

Our school does not limit the amount of food students can eat. In order for students to get used to a variety of foods and to have a varied meal every day, it is important to try all the foods. School meals cover approximately 30% of the daily nutritional needs if students eat all parts of the meal.

Students with special dietary needs receive a full meal based on a written statement and instructions from a public health nurse or doctor. A separate statement is not required for lactose-free food, as the food provided is always lactose-free.

The school in Jämijärvi generally eats well and is very satisfied with the food. According to the School Health Survey (2025) of the National Institute for Health and Welfare, 83% of students in Jämijärvi were satisfied with the quality of school food and 73% with the taste, while the national average was well below 50%. Meals are also available for municipal employees and their guests. The administrative secretary will invoice for meals.

Sick leave or other exceptions to the need for transportation, such as competitions, TET weeks, study trips, camp schools, holiday trips, etc., must always be reported directly to the school bus driver.

Taxi transportation is reserved for students who are on a transportation plan only. If a student is going to visit another student, parents should ask the taxi driver if they can fit in the taxi and otherwise make arrangements directly with the driver.

Seat belts must always be fastened during school transportation.

The administrative secretary helps with questions related to school transportation.

In Jämijärvi, the 2026–27 school year will begin on Tue 11 August 2026 and end on Sat 5 June 2027.

Jämijärven Koti ja Koulu ry is a parent association for all parents of students at Jämijärvi comprehensive school. The purpose of the association is to maintain close cooperation between homes and schools and to organize meaningful activities for students. The board includes a representative from each school class, but all others interested in the activities are warmly welcome to join.
